Transit New Zealand

Who We Are

Transit is a Crown entity responsible for the management of the country's state highway network. Transit employs about 450 staff and has an annual budget of around $1.3 billion spread across planning, capital projects and maintenance. We plan for a state highway network that assists economic development, safety and personal security, improves access and mobility, while protecting and promoting public health and ensuring environmental sustainability.

We currently have a capital works programme in excess of $420 million per annum over the next 10 years. The major activities are taking place in the Auckland, Waikato and Wellington regions and include development of high occupancy vehicle lanes, toll projects and systems and busways. Transit covers traffic management, safety improvements, maintenance, access control and utility management. We are making greater use of technology and implementing travel demand management initiatives, including ramp signalling, variable management signs, etc.
