Main business activity
Transpower New Zealand plays a central role in New Zealand’s dynamic electricity industry. The company’s principal activity is the provision of high voltage electricity transmission and system operator services. Transpower provides the link between generators, distribution companies and retail companies and thus ensures a secure and reliable delivery of electricity from the point of generation to New Zealand consumers in their homes and businesses.
As the system operator, Transpower is also responsible for the real-time coordination of the power system.
Who we are
Transpower is the owner of New Zealand’s high voltage transmission grid, which transmits electricity throughout the country. The high voltage transmission grid includes 12,000km of transmission lines, over 170 substations and switchyards and a control system that matches electricity generation to demand.
Electricity is generated by New Zealand’s hydro, thermal and geothermal power stations. It is then transmitted throughout New Zealand by Transpower on high voltage transmission lines to distribution companies and directly to major industrial companies. We promote an efficient and competitive market by providing information, energy scheduling and dispatch services, and maintaining security of supply.
