Energetic and diverse region
Wellington is an energetic and diverse region, which encompasses the lower part of the North Island. It includes the wine-growing Wairarapa region and the sunny beaches of Kapiti coast, as well as four cities – Porirua, Hutt City, Upper Hutt and Wellington.

There are 44,000 businesses and a workforce of 270,000 in Wellington. A higher proportion of the Wellington workforce operate in highly-skilled occupations compared to the national average – more than 40% of workers are employed as professionals or managers – and accordingly the workforce is higher paid.
