Who We Are

The New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA) is a statutory semi-autonomous body attached to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

The NZFSA is by far the largest employer of Veterinarians in New Zealand and is highly respected internationally for its technical excellence.

The Verification Agency (NZFSA VA) is a critical entity within the New Zealand food industry as 80 per cent of food produced in New Zealand is exported and 50 per cent of New Zealand export earning are from food and food related products.

The agency provides service to approximately 700 food processing companies in a diverse range of locations throughout New Zealand, with the meat export sector accounting for 80 per cent of the agency's activities.

The agency is committed to providing a national verification programme which underpins credible consumer assurances and has the confidence of all stakeholders, particularly our trading partners.

Working as an overseas-trained vet in New Zealand - are you eligible?

In order to work as a vet in New Zealand you must be registered with the New Zealand Veterinary Council (VCNZ).

VCNZ recognizes veterinary degrees from certain recognized institutions. If you received your degree from a university that's not on this list, then you may be able to apply for registration by examination.
