Who We Are
Contact supplies energy to more than half a million customers and is one of the country’s largest listed companies and one of New Zealand’s most widely held stocks with around 85,000 shareholders.
Contact has been in operation since 1996, when it acquired a portfolio of electricity generation and gas assets from the state owned electricity generator, ECNZ (Electricity Corporation of New Zealand). The Company was listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange in May 1999. In October 2004, Origin Energy became the major shareholder with a 51.4 percent stake in the Company. We operate a diverse portfolio if electricity generation including renewable hydro power stations, renewable geothermal plants and four natural gas-fired power stations.
Approximately half our electricity is from renewable hydro and geothermal power stations and we run two of the most modern, energy efficient combined cycle gas turbine plants in the country. Contact Energy has plans to invest up to $2 billion in renewable generation in the next five years, and will be looking to employ additional staff in project and permanent roles to support this development.
Main Business Activity
Contact Energy generates between 25-30% of New Zealand’s electricity needs through a diverse generation and retail portfolio and is the country’s largest wholesaler and retailer of natural gas and LPG.

In addition to our Wellington based corporate head office, we have offices in Lower Hutt, Auckland, Levin and Dunedin and 10 generation sites in operation throughout New Zealand.
