ONTRACK is a state-owned enterprise, which owns and operates the national railway infrastructure. ONTRACK Infrastructure Ltd is the maintenance arm of ONTRACK.
We are a national organisation operating from Whangarei in the far north to Invercargill in the south. We currently employee 870 employees, with this number expected to grow in the next year.

Background

ONTRACK is the trading name for the New Zealand Railways Corporation. From September 2004 it has owned, maintained and managed the railway infrastructure, following the purchase by the Crown of the rail network.

- Owns, maintains and operates the New Zealand rail network
- Provides rail operators with access to the tracks
- Provides advice to the crown on rail infrastructure issues
- Manages 18,000 hectares of land and leases on behalf of the government.
Network Maintenance and Development
ONTRACK is responsible for the maintenance and renewals of tracks, signals, tunnels, bridges, passenger platforms, telecommunications, electric power supply and associated infrastructure. ONTRACK also designs and constructs additional railway infrastructure across New Zealand.
Operating and Maintaining the Network
Each week ONTRACK’s Train Control manages the movement of 900 freight trains, 52 inter-city passenger trains, approximately 2200 Wellington and 1200 Auckland suburban passenger services.
Projects
ONTRACK currently has three major projects underway
- The Auckland rail upgrade, including the double tracking and extension of track www.projectdart.org.nz
- The electrification and improved signalling of the Auckland network
- The Wellington area project, including the expansion of the electrified area, lowering of tunnels and increased capacity for trains into Wellington station.
