Working in New Zealand

Versatile workplaces encourage work/life balance

The key to motivating people

New migrants and returning New Zealanders are often interested in combining career development with New Zealand's attractive lifestyle opportunities.

Whether their commitment is to raising a family in a safe, friendly environment or enjoying the relatively unspoilt natural environment, they recognise that New Zealand offers a range of exciting opportunities.

Many employers are well aware that the key to recruiting, retaining and motivating people in a skills-short employment market lies in offering workplace conditions that enable people to fulfil their interests and commitments outside work as well as at work.

EEO Trust Work & Life Awards

The Equal Employment Opportunities (EEO) Trust was established in 1992 by government and business to help employers make the most of the New Zealand workforce, with its diverse mix of backgrounds, interests and skills.

The EEO Trust works in partnership with employers to enable them to achieve business success through creating versatile workplaces, which take advantage of the diverse population.

Chief Executive Dr Philippa Reed says the EEO Trust has been instrumental in building awareness of the importance of enabling people to balance and integrate their working and personal lives. In 1998, it established the EEO Trust Work & Family Awards which were subsequently renamed the EEO Trust Work & Life Awards.

“The Work & Life Awards have profiled some of New Zealand's leading employers which recognise that good work/life balance tends to equate with good workplace performance,” says Dr Reed.

“Our Awards winners have demonstrated that businesses which encourage work/life balance reap the rewards in employee commitment, motivation and retention.”

Awards winners include a wide range of employers, from multi-nationals employing thousands of people to small town businesses.

“Size and industry sector are no barrier to enabling work/life balance,” says Dr Reed. “Winners include financial organisations, IT providers, manufacturers, not-for-profits and government agencies.”

EEO members ahead

As well as Work & Life Awards entrants and winners, the EEO Trust works closely with its member organisations; more than 380 workplaces which are committed to fair employment practices.

EEO Employers Group members come from a range of industry sectors and are more likely than other New Zealand employers to have policies and procedures which help ensure fair
employment practices.

Members use the EEO Employers Group logo to demonstrate that they are committed to employment practices which enable the diverse range of people making up our population to reach their potential at work.

“The EEO Trust works closely with employers to provide information and ideas on recruiting, retaining and rewarding the very best people for a job,” says Dr Reed.

“This includes exploring what people need to reach their potential at work so that we can help employers meet those needs, and providing information and tools to help organisations develop versatile workplaces.”

EEO Employers Group members out-perform other New Zealand employees on most diversity measures, including initiatives to encourage work/life balance.
