Steve and Jayne Mills moved to Napier

We've got everything we ever dreamed of here... this is our life

When Steve and Jayne Mills caught their first sight of Napier back in 2004 during a visit they were sold.

“We just fell in love with the country and that feeling has never gone away”, Steve says, explaining that the family had settled so easily into their new environment that from day one it simply felt like home. There had only been minor pangs of homesickness, but the lifestyle and new business career the couple had forged for themselves overwhelmed any such emotions.

With the help of the Napier City Council's economic development manager Ron Massey, Steve sought and gained a long term business visa, which effectively gives the family three years and within two they must furnish the Immigration Service with business results from their motel business, showing they have achieved certain guidelines.

They are determined to make it work, and determined to become Kiwis. “We just love it here and have no intention of going back.”

Their children, Sophie (14) Richard (17) and 19-year-old Gary are also flourishing in their new home, with Richard in particular being able to pursue his dream of becoming a pilot. He won a flying scholarship after taking lessons, which would not have been possible back in the bustling UK.

“Nothing is a problem here,” Steve comments and adds that the friendliness of the community had effectively left them speechless with delight.

Their new life, running the popular and luxurious Fountain Court Motel near the central city, is a busy one but they have thrown all their enthusiasm and devotion into it. “We've got everything we ever dreamed of here...this is our life.”
