Working in New Zealand

Do doctors need to register with the Medical Association?

At the time of lodging an application, a doctor applying for a work visa or a residence visa must provide evidence from the Medical Council of New Zealand of:

  • full or provisional occupational registration in New Zealand, or

  • evidence that they are eligible for full or provisional registration subject only to attending a personal interview with a Council representative within one month of their arrival in New Zealand.

For information about registration requirements, please refer to the Medical Council of New Zealand.

Note: Other occupations also have registration requirements. There is a list of those occupations on Immigration New Zealand’s website.
