Working in New Zealand

Angela Allister and family moved to Wellington

Life is better for us, and safer for the children

Angela attended a job fair in London where the Capital Coast District Health Board was advertising for nurses. As a result, in July the same year she was offered a job by Wellington Hospital and arrived in New Zealand four months later.

It didn’t take long for husband Neil, an automotive engineer, to follow. After registering on several job-search websites, he organised an interview and found work as a technical advisor with the Ministry of Transport. He and the boys joined Angela just before Christmas and they haven’t looked back.

Wellington has everything for the children and for us. We love the compactness of the city, which means that Neil and I can meet for lunch most days for the first time in our lives. There are beaches for the boys and they love school where they do cross-country running, play table tennis and hockey – which they would not have done until secondary school in England. And every school here has a swimming pool!

Neil often cycles or walks to work. The traffic is so light it makes driving a pleasure, he says.
His advice to prospective migrants: Come with an open mind, take your time before making
decisions, be adaptable and, most important, look forward and not back.
