There are several valid reasons for which one may apply for a Temporary Work Visa in New Zealand. After studying here, many students actively seek experience and employment. Work permits and visas are issued to suitable candidates with skills in needed fields and experience in certain in-demand occupations, and to most people who are offered a job by a New Zealand employer. It is also possible to obtain a temporary work permit and/or visa for individuals employed for a specific event or because of a specific purpose; and also for those wanting to join a spouse or partner who is already living or working in New Zealand, or who has received a valid visa for the purposes of working in New Zealand.
There are basic requirements to be met
All applicants, regardless of the individual circumstances, must meet the same basic requirements as any foreign national entering the country. All visa applicants must be in good health and of good character. Communicable diseases and/or criminal records, including even one major conviction, are generally grounds for denial of a permit and visa. Applicants must also be under the age of 55 and genuinely desire to be employed in New Zealand. Once a visa and permit are granted, you must be sure to follow a few rules or face immediate expulsion from the country.
- You must only stay in the country for the length of time specified in your visa
- You must maintain employment of the type specified in your permit
- You must obey all of New Zealand's laws
The process can be very streamlined
If your job happens to be on the Immediate Skills Shortage List, the application process is very streamlined and approval rates are very high. If you meet the basic requirements and have a valid offer of employment from an employer who can prove their adherence to occupational and immigration regulations, then you are all but guaranteed entry. To obtain a work visa for jobs not on the skills shortage list, employers must show that no New Zealander is available for the work, and generally a job offer is only extended in such circumstances.
You can apply for a work permit after study
A job offer after completing at least a three-year course of study in New Zealand allows you to apply for a work permit for an additional two years, or three if you are earning certification from a New Zealand regulatory organisation. Without a job offer, students must qualify for the Skilled Migrant category to apply for a work permit. After obtaining employment, additional work permits can be applied for, allowing for three more years of work after completing a course of study. If you are applying for a Temporary Work Visa in order to join you partner in New Zealand, they must already have a valid visa and permit and be intending to stay in New Zealand for the entire time specified in your application.
With so many ways to qualify for a Temporary Work Visa, it's easy to take advantage of all that New Zealand has to offer.
