POSITION: National Safety Engineer
RESPONSIBLE TO: Traffic and Safety Manager
LOCATION: National Office

JOB PURPOSE
To provide assurance to the Traffic and Safety Manager that safety issues are investigated and policy on intervention improvements developed, which contribute to Transit’s objective of delivering an integrated, safe, responsive and sustainable State Highway network.
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS
• Introduce new or revised road safety policies that improve efficiency and bring about a reduction of crashes (both number and severity) on the New Zealand state highway network
• The Traffic and Safety Section is recognised as an industry leader
DELEGATIONS
The Traffic and Safety Manager may agree to delegate specific delegations to the National Safety Engineer.
NETWORK OPERATIONS TEAM
This team is dependent on each other and charged with being recognised by the Industry and Transit Board for the efficient delivery of an integrated, safe, responsive and sustainable State Highway network to transport users and will work with the General Manager – Network Operations to provide strategic direction to the division.

ROLE SUMMARY
Sustainable Asset and Network Improvement
The position holder is responsible for proactively developing guidelines and procedures for safety related activities. They will liaise with Land Transport New Zealand and NZ Policy on all traffic and safety related activities, particularly joint publications. They will also consult with the industry and road user groups.
The position holder will provide a technical service to Transit staff and the wider industry.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Sector Knowledge
The position holder will have a minimum of seven to ten years experience in road safety and traffic engineering experience sound roading background, including experience in geometric design, safety and traffic management related matters, and safety audits. They will have knowledge of Land Transport New Zealand and Transit New Zealand policies and procedures relating to the safety of road networks. The position holder will continually strive to stay abreast of national and international developments, standards and initiatives in respect to road safety.
Core Skills
The position holder will be a good communicator with excellent written and oral presentation and language skills, and the ability to report on problems and proposals clearly and concisely. They will have proven ability to extend their knowledge into new subject areas.

Technical Skills and Qualifications
It is expected that the position holder will be tertiary qualified in Civil Engineering with BE (Civil), NZCE or BSc, or equivalent, and preferably a Diploma or other postgraduate qualification in transportation engineering.
Driver’s Licence
A valid NZ Driver’s Licence (or equivalent) is required for this position.
