As the owner and operator of the National Grid, Transpower plays a key role in New Zealand’s economy. We transmit electricity, maintain the National Grid, plan and build necessary upgrades to the grid, and operate the wholesale electricity market in New Zealand. This is a superb opportunity to be part of an exciting time in the development of New Zealand’s transmission infrastructure.

You will have the opportunity to work with power system planners, transmission line engineers, grid economics analysts, customer service managers, project and programme managers, maintenance support engineers, environmental planners, property advisors, external engineering consultants and others to support a seamless concept-to-approval process for new-build and upgrade projects for electricity transmission substations, underground cable systems and overhead lines.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Preparation of conceptual design reports and preliminary cost estimates for new substations and for extending and modifying existing substations.
  • Preparation of engineering briefs and provision of technical management services for engineering investigations outsourced to external consultants.   
  • Preparation of technical performance specifications for the purchase of high voltage plant.
  • Developing engineering policies and standards for the design of substations.

Additional requirements and responsibilities for a Senior Development Engineer include:

  • Extensive industry experience in the specification, design, manufacture, testing or commissioning of HV/EHV electrical plant.
  • Mentoring and directing junior engineers in the team.
  • Representing Transpower at public forums and Environment Court hearings.

You will also need the ability to interpret and use industry standards such as those published by IEC. Your expertise and knowledge of high voltage electricity transmission engineering and associated technologies will ensure your success in this role. However applicants with less experience will be considered.
