Emergency Medical Consultant - Lower North Island

Our client is after an experienced Emergency Medicine doctor with at least five years’ experience in the specialty of Emergency Medicine to join the two existing specialists.
Our client is a 300 bed secondary hospital, which services an urban population of 75,000 and a total population catchment of 161,000. The emergency department is a district trauma centre, servicing a geographically large area with pockets of isolated rural townships – Otaki, Wairarapa, Horowhenua, Tararua, southern Hawke’s Bay districts and Linton Military camp – with a rural population of 86,000.
The Level 5 Emergency Department is a modern facility with close access to ICU, radiology, and operating theatres. All acute services are provided on site with the exclusion of neurosurgery, cardio-thoracic and plastic surgery. Patients requiring these services are transferred to Wellington.
The Emergency Service is busy with approximately 36,000 patients a year and an admission rate of about 31%. There is a higher than average trauma workload due to work related rural injuries, and also road accidents from a number of state highways that transect the region.
Our client is located in a major university city and is at the hub of key routes to the central North Island ski fields, and river adventures. Wellington the capital city, is only a 2 hour journey by road, as are the wine growing regions of Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa.
