Settling a family in Wellington

Life is better for us, and safer for the children

Angela Allister attended a job fair in London where the Capital Coast District Health Board was advertising for nurses. As a result, she was offered a job by Wellington Hospital and arrived in New Zealand just four months later.

It didn’t take long for husband Neil, an automotive engineer, to follow. After registering on several job-search websites, he organised an interview and found work as a technical adviser with the Ministry of Transport. He and the couple’s boys joined Angela in Wellington, and they haven’t looked back.Angela Allister and family

“Wellington has everything for the children and for us. We love the compactness of the city, which means that Neil and I can meet for lunch most days for the first time in our lives. There are beaches for the boys and they love school where they do cross-country running, play table tennis and hockey – which they would not have done until secondary school in England. And most schools here have a swimming pool!” Angela says.

Neil often cycles or walks to work. His advice to prospective migrants: “Come with an open mind, take your time before making decisions, be adaptable and, most important, look forward and not back.”
