Bay of Plenty

The Bay of Plenty region stretches from the Coromandel Peninsula in the West of the North Island to Cape Runaway in the East. From Waihi Beach to Opape you will find the sandy part of the Bay of Plenty coast. Keep going from Opape to Cape Runaway for the rocky landscape.

The region’s main urban centre is Tauranga, followed by Rotorua and Whakatane. Tauranga is one of New Zealand's major ports, with the Port of Tauranga handling large consignments of timber from the forested regions of the island's interior.

Nearly 195,000 people live in the Bay of Plenty region. Of those, over 95,000 are in Tauranga. The city is home to the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic, as well as a branch of the University of Waikato.

The Bay of Plenty region is forested and has extensive agriculture. The climate is nearly tropical, both humid and warm most of the year. This type of climate makes the region ideal for the growth of kiwifruit, apples and avocados. As with most of New Zealand, sheep farming is common.
