North or South Island?

There are a number of questions that you need to ask yourself before deciding where to live in New Zealand. For some, this decision will have already been made if a job offer has been accepted and a location has been advised in the job specification. For others, all options are open and it is only a matter of choosing where to settle.

Weather

New Zealand has a diverse climate that varies widely from the top of the North Island to the bottom tip of the South Island. The North Island generally has a warmer and wetter climate than the South Island. Within each island there are also micro climates which dictate weather patterns.

For example, in the South Island when the East Coast is enjoying some fine and sunny weather there is a good chance that on the West Coast they will be receiving a good amount of rain! For beach lovers, the North Island is a haven. For those who love the snow and spectacular mountain ranges and glaciers, the South Island is a prime destination.

Location

If you like the bright city lights, Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch are more vibrant and will give you more variety and excitement than a smaller town, though compared to global standards, even Wellington and Christchurch have a small, cozy feeling for cities. Your job may require you to live in close proximity to these areas.

Commuting is a much more pleasant experience in New Zealand than in many other countries. While New Zealand does not have the infrastructure for fast trains, driving is more bearable on the open road – especially in the South Island where the population is relatively small.

Something different

If you have come from a built-up residential town or city, you might be craving a more rural lifestyle. It is more than achievable to live in a rural location whilst retaining good access to the city. It would be advisable to speak with someone who has made this decision, as sometimes the dream doesn't quite match the reality and it is often a much harder lifestyle than expected. The benefits include extra space, tranquility and a haven for children to grow up in. In many parts of New Zealand it is possible to have a house by the sea, although house prices will generally be at a premium.

Cost

There is a reasonably large price differential between the two islands. The North Island, particularly around Auckland, is more expensive. You can expect to pay a minimum of $400k for a three-bedroom house. In the South Island, for the same price, you can buy a good-sized four-bedroom house. Land prices are generally cheaper in the South Island, depending on location, views and quality of the land.
