Northland

Northland is, as the name suggests, the northern-most region in New Zealand, located at the top of the North Island. The regional capital is Whangarei and the region has three territorial authorities: the Far North District Council, the Whangarei District Council and the Kaipara District Council.

Due to its mild climate, Northland is often referred to by New Zealanders as the Winterless North. Temperatures in summer range between 22C and 26C, while in winter, high temperatures range between 14C and 17C. Northlanders enjoy about 2000 annual sunshine hours in many parts of the region.

With a population of approximately 148,000 people, the region is in a steady growth phase. Northland’s gross regional product of $3.4 billion per year represents 3% of the country’s total. The growth complements a solid industry base of pastoral farming, horticulture, forestry and wood processing, as well as tourism.

Northland has 17,500 businesses and 51,500 employees working in full-time positions.
