Migrants boost NZ population

According to Statistics NZ’s latest data, the influx of new migrants to New Zealand has boosted the country’s population in all 16 regions.

The growth in population was mainly due to an increase in New Zealand’s net gain from permanent and long-term migration – from 4,700 in the year ending June 2008 to 12,500 in the June 2009 year.

Auckland and Canterbury, the country’s two most populated regions, were the fastest-growing in the June 2009 year, with growth rates of 1.5% and 1.2%, respectively.

The fastest growing territorial authority areas were Selwyn (up 2.8%) and Queenstown-Lakes district (up 2.6%). A total of 65 out of 73 territorial authority areas recorded population growth.

Tauranga is currently New Zealand’s fastest-growing main urban area (up 1.6%) and Pukekohe has maintained its position as the fastest-growing secondary urban area (up 1.9%).
