New minimum income requirement for Essential Skills Policy

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has announced that applications for a visitor or student visa for dependent children of Essential Skills work visa holders will need to prove that the parent meets a minimum income threshold of $33,675 per annum gross, unless the parent held a work visa on and before 30 November 2009.

According to INZ, this minimum threshold has been introduced to ensure a basic standard of living for temporary migrant families while they are in New Zealand, and that the living standards of migrant workers do not fall below those of families supported by the income support system.

The threshold has been calculated using the unemployment benefit, maximum accommodation supplement and family tax credit rate.
