Healthdownsouth – Otago and Southland District Health Boards
About us
As District Health Boards, we provide government-funded hospital services to our region and fund other primary health services. We employ a wide range of health professionals to our inpatient and community based health services.
Where we are
Located in the lower South Island, we service a population of 289,000, with 70% based in the cities of Dunedin and Invercargill. The remainder is spread amongst smaller towns and New Zealand’s iconic, scenic, tourist destinations – Queenstown, Milford Sound, Stewart Island.
Wide-open spaces
If you love the outdoors and are looking for a safe, smaller sized city with wide-open spaces, affordable housing, excellent schools and the ability to pursue your hobbies and spend time with your family after work each day, then Invercargill and Dunedin cities are ideally suited.
Outdoor living
What’s more, our region also offers the best in outdoors life with two of New Zealand’s national parks, four main ski fields, cycling, hunting, wind surfing and beaches all close by without traffic jams to get in your way.
Our hospitals
Dunedin Hospital is a 350-bed, tertiary level, University teaching hospital, providing all specialties and most sub-specialties.
Southland Hospital is a near new 181-bed, secondary level, University teaching hospital providing all specialties.
Rural hospitals and general practice
There are six smaller rural hospitals located in scenic towns around our region, which we also recruit health professionals to. We can also connect GPs with our region’s practices to explore employment opportunities.
