KiwiRail Group is responsible for the operation of rail freight and passenger services, the management and development of the rail infrastructure and the operation of passenger and freight ferry services.

Who we are

KiwiRail Group manages the different rail and ferry businesses in public ownership, making it one of New Zealand’s biggest freight companies, largest tourism operators, most significant property owners and developers – and a major infrastructure developer and project manager.

Key divisions of the business include:

  • Kiwirail Freight provides rail freight services and locomotives for passenger services.
  • Interislander operates the ferry passenger and freight services.
  • ONTRACK maintains and improves the rail network and controls the operation of trains on the network.
  • Tranz Metro provides urban passenger services in Wellington.
  • Tranz Scenic operates long distance passenger rail services.
  • Hillside Engineering is the rail engineering workshop.

Employment opportunities

  • Mechanical engineers with experience in operations and/or maintenance of rail machinery, for example fitters and turners
  • Marine engineers, deck officers and able-bodied seafarers to work in our ferry business
  • Qualified civil or electrical engineers with experience in rail or infrastructure industries
  • Qualified signalling staff to service and install rail signalling equipment
  • Infrastructure staff with experience in leading teams of field workers within the rail industry. This will include physical, outdoors work
  • Mechanical tradesperson for diesel engine work
  • Fabrication and foundry tradesperson (Dunedin only)
  • Welders
