Southern Cross Hospitals
Our business
Our national network of private hospitals includes wholly-owned facilities and joint ventures with medical specialists. We are a national not-for-profit organisation which aims to deliver quality healthcare at affordable prices. Any financial surpluses are reinvested into improving healthcare facilities, harnessing new technologies and developing our valued employees.
Around 800 independent medical specialists operate within our hospitals, including many leaders in clinical innovation. All specialists operating with us complete a formal registration process.
Our workplace
We promote a friendly, positive culture, and have over 1000 employees nationwide. We offer them competitive pay, a flexible philosophy – to help maintain work/life balance – and professional development programmes approved by the Nursing Council of New Zealand. Our people enjoy planned Christmas and New Year breaks, subsidised health insurance options and a modern, well-equipped workplace. We pursue leadership in the private sector, introducing innovative graduate and surgical nursing education programmes, and we have consistently performed in the top tier when our employees’ views were ranked against 300 other healthcare organisations in Australasia.

Employment opportunities
As New Zealand’s largest private hospital network we offer employment to registered nurses and anaesthetic technicians/ODP’s in a variety of work environments, including the operating room, PACU/recovery and surgical wards. Southern Cross Hospitals was the first in the private surgical sector to gain approval from the Nursing Council of New Zealand for our Professional Development and Recognition Programme (PDRP). We also offer innovative Peri-operative nursing training and new graduate programmes across our facilities in the Auckland region.
In cooperation with leading tertiary institutions, we offer a Return to Nursing programme, introduced initially in Auckland and Wellington. This features financial assistance with course fees and childcare for nurses returning to the workforce, and offers employment opportunities with Southern Cross Hospitals on completion.
