Teaching jobs in New Zealand
Overseas teachers have long been attracted to the New Zealand climate, lifestyle and classrooms. With growing school rolls, teachers have been able to come to New Zealand to work in some of the most exciting schools in the world. Overseas-trained teachers need to be extremely competent in written and spoken English. The majority of overseas teachers working in New Zealand schools have come from countries with strong language, cultural and educational similarities with New Zealand, such as the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and South Africa.
Specialist teachers needed
The demand for teachers is now strong in both primary and secondary sectors. The most immediate teacher supply pressure is likely to be in primary schools at the start of the 2009 school year. Secondary teachers of mathematics, physics, chemistry and technology will continue to be in demand over the next few years.
The TeachNZ website has a range of stories from overseas-trained teachers teaching in New Zealand schools. For more information, please visit our website.
Immigration
The process for primary and secondary teachers getting a work permit has been simplified. Primary teachers with a minimum of three years experience, and secondary teachers are regarded as being priority occupations.
Applying for teaching jobs in New Zealand for work permits or residency
There is no central authority employing teachers. Schools and their board of trustees are the employers and advertise vacancies online at www.edgazette.govt.nz
Qualifications assessment and teacher registration
Overseas qualifications must be verified and checked for comparability with New Zealand qualifications. Teacher registration is compulsory for all teachers in New Zealand. The TeachNZ website has details on the process for overseas teachers to follow. For more information, view www.teachnz.govt.nz
