Victoria University of Wellington

Wellington tram and university campus

Main business activity

We are a highly regarded New Zealand University, internationally known for providing a wide range of undergraduate and post graduate academic programmes. Our teaching and learning is innovative and informed by recognised leading edge research.

Employee benefits

At Victoria we actively encourage all our staff to achieve productive and satisfying careers. Every effort goes into providing a safe and supportive environment and ensuring all staff are treated in a fair and proper manner.

We provide worldwide opportunities for our academic staff as members of the international network of scholars, scholarship and research, providing diversity and depth to our perspectives.

Who we are

For more than a century Victoria University of Wellington – Te Whare Wānanga o te Ūpoko o te Ika a Māui – has developed a tradition of strong international links in teaching and research and programmes of national significance and international quality. From its location in Wellington, the capital city, Victoria University undertakes teaching and research to maintain, disseminate and advance knowledge.

Victoria University has seven faculties: Architecture and Design, Humanities and Social Sciences, Law, Science, Engineering, Education, and Commerce and Administration. Each is responsible for a range of academic programmes.

Toihuarewa, a separate pan-university faculty equivalent, is the Māori academic forum. All Māori academics may elect to become members, and non-Māori academics teaching courses or undertaking research with a significant Māori content may be invited to be part of Toihuarewa.

We are a thriving community of almost 25,000 people located across four Wellington campuses. Most, of course, are students – of all nationalities, from all walks of life – who have come to learn in the vital, open environment that only university study can offer. The remainder are the staff, here to help students get the very most out of their time and experiences at Vic.

Victoria can take advantage of connections and values its relationships with (Māori) iwi, business, government, the judiciary, public and private research organisations, cultural organisations and resources, other universities and tertiary providers and the international community through the diplomatic corps. Wellington has a reputation for being a vibrant city where learning doesn't stop at the university's doors.

Internationally recognised

Internationally Victoria is recognised as a leading University in New Zealand and Australia, and as a world leader in a number of areas of scholarship and enquiry. Victoria University is committed to providing students with opportunities to acquire, understand and apply disciplinary and interdisciplinary knowledge, as well as related skills and attitudes, and to enhance their personal development.

The research achievements of academic staff and research students, many working on New Zealand-specific projects, have helped extend the nation’s knowledge and understanding. Victoria is closely allied to the Crown Research Institutes, and has also forged excellent links with government agencies. Partnerships often involve the sharing of both facilities and research projects.

Employment opportunities

We seek applications from talented and qualified individuals for a wide variety of academic and general professional roles. We are particularly interested in academic applicants who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of:

  • Engineering
  • Science
  • Law
  • Government
  • Humanities and Social Sciences.

If you have a high quality record in teaching scholarship and research, are innovative, professional and effectively plan and organise to achieve desired outcomes, we would love to hear from you.
