Do doctors need to register with the Medical Council of New Zealand?

At the time of lodging an application, a doctor applying for a work visa or a residence visa for New Zealand must provide evidence from the Medical Council of New Zealand of:

  • Full or provisional occupational registration in New Zealand, or
  • Evidence that he or she is eligible for full or provisional registration subject only to attending a personal interview with a Council representative within one month of arrival in New Zealand.

For information about registration requirements for doctors and other medical professionals, please refer to the Medical Council of New Zealand, where you will also find a self-assessment tool to see if you are eligible for registration in the country.
