Applying for a temporary work visa in New Zealand

There are several valid reasons for which one may apply for a temporary work visa. After studying in New Zealand, for example, many students actively seek experience and employment.

Work permits and visas are issued to suitable candidates with skills in needed fields and experience in certain in-demand occupations, as well as to most people who are offered a job by a New Zealand employer.

It is also possible to obtain a temporary work permit and/or visa for individuals employed for a specific event or because of a specific purpose (i.e. a tournament or show); and also for those wanting to join a spouse or partner who is already living or working in New Zealand or who has received a valid visa for the purposes of working in New Zealand.

Basic requirements

All applicants, regardless of the individual circumstances, must meet the same basic requirements as any foreign national entering the country. All visa applicants must be in good health and of good character. Communicable diseases and/or criminal records, including even one major conviction, are generally grounds for denial of a permit and visa.

Applicants must also be under the age of 55 and genuinely desire to be employed in New Zealand. Once a visa and permit are granted, you must be sure to adhere to the following:

  • You must only stay in the country for the length of time specified in your visa
  • You must obey all of New Zealand's laws

How to apply

In order to apply for a temporary work visa, you will need to:

  • Complete the application form
  • Pay the fee
  • Submit your passport (which must be valid for at least three months after the date you plan to leave New Zealand)
  • Submit a recent passport size photograph
If you have a job offer in New Zealand, you must also submit any qualifications you hold relevant to the job you have been offered and any evidence of relevant work experience.

The rights skills can streamline your application

If your job happens to be on the Immediate Skills Shortage List, the application process is streamlined and approval rates are higher. To obtain a work visa for jobs not on the skills shortage list, employers must show that no New Zealander is available for the work, and generally a job offer is only extended in such circumstances.
