Hospice West Auckland has been in operation in West Auckland, New Zealand for 30 years.
The purpose of our existence is so that people with life limiting illnesses in West Auckland, those at the end of life and those who grieve for them, experience death as a dignified and compassionately supported process.
Our Specialist Palliative Care Services are made up of our four bed specialist palliative care beds facility (the Kowhai Suite), our community palliative care team, our team of palliative medicine specialist doctors and Pharmacist and our social care team of psychosocial practitioners. Together they provide free 24 hour, 7 day a week specialist palliative care to the people of West Auckland and the Western Ward of Rodney. Our focus is on holistic care, relieving physical pain and emotional and/or spiritual concerns of patients, carers and their families, so that they experience end of life as fully as possible.
Our teams of specialist doctors, nurses, counsellors, social workers, integrative practitioners, therapists and spiritual care coordinator meet patients and their family and whanua in their own homes, in the Kowhai Suite and at the Living and Learning Centre, during life limiting illness and end of life. Community care gives our patients the choice to die at home with the proper care and support systems in place. We also provide specialist equipment, extensive grief and bereavement services, as well as a range of patient and family day programmes and integrative therapies. We have a nursing clinic at Hospice to give patients and their family’s access to specialist services and to provide information, support and interaction.
Over our long years of serving the West Auckland community, we have developed our own philosophy that makes us unique to other Hospices:
We understand that providing quality care for people requires a holistic approach that sees all things as connected and so we view each person in the context of their daily life. This requires an integration of the physical, emotional, mental, social, environmental and spiritual worlds.
We are a reflective organisation based on learning-organisation principles.
We value diversity and respect the capacity of individuals and the community to engage in decisions about the care and services they receive.
We strive to offer the best therapies, clinical practices and wellness programmes.
At Hospice West Auckland we:
- Address pain, symptoms, questions and fear
- Support and Comfort
Our vision is to excel in the delivery of comprehensive, compassionate, responsive palliative care through our interdisciplinary team.
Initially a community based service, over the years we have seen much change and growth. In 2014 we opened our four bed specialist palliative care facility the Kowhai Suite. This year we have joined with the Hospices of Auckland in launching the Poi initiative for enhancing better general palliative care outcomes across the region.
We have come a long way on our journey from humble volunteer beginnings to the professional specialist service we are today, one that continues to grow, adapt and evolve to the ever changing challenges facing the health sector.
