Vehicle Testing New Zealand

Posted on November 8, 2017August 8, 2019 by admin

VTNZ as we know it today started its life in 1994 as a State Owned Enterprise following a review of the Ministry of Transport. Within five short years it had grown to 52 stations across New Zealand.

About VTNZ

VTNZ as we know it today started its life in 1994 as a State Owned Enterprise following a review of the Ministry of Transport. Within five short years it had grown to 52 stations across New Zealand.

VTNZ was privatised in 1999, and purchased by the Motor Trade Association.  VTNZ used to be known by its full name, Vehicle Testing New Zealand and chose to re-brand to the much more succinct “VTNZ” in 2004.

Also in 2004, VTNZ purchased the business of On Road New Zealand.  On Road added another 14 stations and 250 staff which at the time increased VTNZ’s coverage to 75 testing stations nationwide with staff numbers close to 1,000.  In 2008 the On Road stations were rebranded to VTNZ which meant there were 80 bright orange testing stations spread around the country.

There are now 82 VTNZ testing stations and nearly all carry out Warrant of Fitness inspections (most are run on a drop-by basis so our customers don’t require an advance WoF booking time).  Well over half of the stations also carry out Certificate of Fitness safety inspections on the heavy vehicles of New Zealand, as well as car pre-purchase inspections.  And VTNZ is the only company to have satellite “offsites” to inspect heavy vehicles in the more rural areas. In late 2013, VTNZ began the next phase of its evolution with two significant changes.

Firstly, the shareholding of VTNZ changed with the 60% purchase of MTA shares by DEKRA SE, one of the world’s leading expert organisations in the field of testing, inspection and certification. DEKRA SE is based in Stuttgart, Germany and has around 28,000 employees worldwide.  It’s fitting that DEKRA SE purchased a 60% shareholding in VTNZ. Their Business Unit, DEKRA Automotive, is the world’s largest vehicle inspection provider, carrying out more than 23 million vehicle inspections a year. And VTNZ is New Zealand’s largest vehicle inspection company – by a country mile.

The second significant change has been the recognition of VTNZ’s engagement journey by Kenexa in their annual Best Workplaces Awards. These Awards arise from New Zealand’s largest and most prestigious annual workplace survey, led by Kenexa. In November 2014, VTNZ won both the Best Enterprise category for companies with over 750 employees and was the Overall Winner. Our team’s high level of engagement means they are committed to going the extra mile for customers and team members and are passionate about your vehicle safety.

Well known market leaders

VTNZ is the market leader in Vehicle Inspections. Having over 80 stations across the country allows us to provide a wide variety of services.

  • Warrant of Fitness safety inspections
  • WoF+Check-Up service
  • Certificate of Fitness safety inspections
  • Vehicle Condition Assessements – primarily for heavy vehicles
  • Entry Certification
  • Pre-Purchase Inspections
  • Crash Investigations
  • Agency transactions such as Motor Vehicle Registrations, Road User Charges & Driver Licences
  • Uniforms

Part of being a team is looking like a team. At VTNZ we provide our team with a range of professional and quality uniforms.

Training

VTNZ has an award winning Training and Development team waiting to help you become the best in your field. From technical to leadership we have your training needs covered! Our dedicated Training Centre is where we train our Vehicle Inspectors.

Career development

VTNZ provides defined career pathways for its team members. If you look at our Career Pathways, you can see that there are plenty of opportunities for team members to grow at VTNZ. We frequently have team members moving within the company into new roles. Through our performance planning process, we are able to help you develop within your role and also help you set goals.

Southern cross medical scheme

VTNZ provides all full time and part time team members who work over 20 hours per week with a free medical scheme with Southern Cross. When a team member first starts with VTNZ they also get the option to include immediate family members at a reduced rate and also to have pre-existing conditions covered.

National opportunities

With testing stations from Kaitaia to Invercargill, as well as a large number of satellite “offsites”, opportunities frequently arise within VTNZ that allow team members to transfer to other locations.

Our people promise

We promise each team member an induction on joining, annual performance review, safe working environment, open and honest communication and we promote teamwork through our internal values.
