The NZ Government and KiwiRail are currently delivering a significant investment in New Zealand’s rail network. To support that investment now, and in the future, Downer New Zealand is committed to developing and growing its capacity and capability in key technical disciplines to assist in delivering the rail programme.

As a result, we are seeking an experienced Design Lead to join our Rail Systems Engineering team based in Wellington, New Zealand. The purpose of the Design Lead is to be responsible for managing, coordinating and overseeing the signalling design work. It is vital that the Design Manager can deliver to project programs and budgets, be able to lead a design team and communicate to all stakeholders. The position is also responsible for all signalling technical work on a project in accordance with the OHS&E, contract and QA requirements.

As a key part of our team you will:

• Effectively manage technical staff, subcontractors and stakeholders for the timely delivery of technical deliverables in a safe and quality manner
• Assist in the development & maintenance of the project program and budget
• Ensure adequacy of the design and completion of its verification before release, including the completion of a traceability matrix to client’s requirements
• Prepare monthly financial reports and assist the Project Manager to identify cost variation, consequences and implement approved variations
• Determine disposition for design non-conformances and approve their implementation
• Effectively manage design team members to implement design and test solutions to meet project requirements in a high quality, safe and timely manner
• Comply with Downer’s and clients’ health and safety policies and standards
• Lead by example, driving Zero Harm through operational excellence
• Work in a safe manner always to avoid personal injury to staff, subcontractors, clients, self and others

To excel as part of our collaborative, forward thinking team you’ll bring:

• Degree in a related Engineering discipline
• A minimum of 5 years’ experience in Rail Systems or Signalling Design environment
• Demonstrated Signalling Design competencies or hold IRSE Design licence
• Be (as a minimum, or able to gain) a corporate Member of the IRSE
• Be a Professional Member (or suitable for admission) of the institute of Engineering New Zealand
• Experience in managing a team and design packages
• Computer literacy and proficiency in the Microsoft® Office suite of software and other packages required specific to engineering design
• Good verbal and written communication skills
• Development of reports, specifications, drawings and project documentation
• Demonstrated Signalling Design competencies or hold IRSE Design licence
• Be (as a minimum) a corporate Member of the IRSE (or able to gain)
