About the Role:

We are seeking an individual to fill the role of a full time Senior Consultant Arborist. As one of our senior consultants, your main responsibility will be delivering Arboricultural Assessment reports to the required standard as part of a team of senior consultants.  This includes:

  • Site assessment,
  • Data capture,
  • Tree identification,
  • Reviewing project plans,
  • Risk assessment,
  • Critical root zone assessment,
  • Proposed work assessment and management plans,
  • Assessing the project as it relates to the relevant District Plans and tree protection rules,
  • Creating detailed tree assessment reports to best practice standards and recognised arboricultural standards.

As a senior consultant it would be expected after adequate training and induction there would be a high level of ownership of the end-to-end delivery of any project, including client liaison. It would also be expected the senior consultant would support managers and other team members through a variety of tasks related to organisation and communication.

The senior consultant arborist role requires a high level of communication ensuring that all administrative duties are completed accurately and delivered with high quality and in a timely manner.

From time to time and with adequate training and support it would be expected that the senior consultant arborist would be capable of providing expert testimony and evidence for Hearings and Environment Court.


 Core Tasks:

  • Arboricultural site inspections and surveys.
  • Undertake hazard assessments.
  • Prepare assessment reports.
  • Liaising with key stakeholders.
  • Arboricultural expert witness and preparation of evidence.
  • Provide expert advice.
  • Preparation of mitigation plans and mitigation concepts.
  • Professional services within the general industry for project management, standards, contracts, auditing, specifications and training.

Other Duties will include:

  • Oversight and management of project delivery;
  • Customer and stakeholder relationship management;
  • Promoting strong collaborative client relationships with positive interactions and value adding activities;
  • Assist the management and support team to prepare reports, presentations, memorandums, quotes, proposals and consents;
  • Answer telephone calls and electronic messages in a professional and timely manner as set down in the company policies,
  • Ensure all emails are checked and responded to appropriately;
  • Work in a collaborative way with the team;

Essential Requirements, Skills and Experience

  • Previous experience in delivering assessment reports in the following critical areas of, risk, effects of proposed work, health and condition and management plans.
  • Experience in general arboriculture to assist with, auditing, temporary secondment in councils, project management and expert witness.
  • Degree, Diploma, or other relevant qualifications in Arboriculture.
  • Proven consultancy experience (minimum of 3 years).
  • Proven ability to write high level assessment reports to a high standard based on the most relevant and up to date science.
  • Ability to deliver on set tasks.
  • Hold a current full drivers licence.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to develop strong client relationships.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including effectiveness in negotiation and liaison.
  • Ability to simultaneously handle multiple and complex projects.
  • Ability to work through competing priorities.
  • A strong work ethic.
  • Attention to detail in all aspects of the role.
  • Knowledge of office management systems and procedures.
  • Proficiency in MS Office.


  • Experience as an expert witness.
  • Previous New Zealand experience and knowledge of New Zealand flora.
  • Experience in health and safety management.
  • Experience with QTRA, or have a formal risk assessment certification.
  • Previous experience using technology to capture data and create reports.
  • Understanding of the Resource Management Act.
  • Knowledge of the Auckland Unitary Plan.
  • An understanding of the Auckland Council regulatory framework and planning rules in relation to trees.
  • Previous experience with Sonic Tomography.
  • Hold a First Aid certificate.
