MDHB are looking for experienced, dynamic, and enthusiastic registered nurses to join the Peri-operative Service Nursing team at Palmerston North Hospital.

Hours of work will be 40 per week, working rostered duties with overtime and on-call as required by the needs of the department.

We are looking for applicants with the following attributes/skills:

  • Ability to communicate well with all members of the multidisciplinary team, patients and family
  • Knowledge and experience in surgical nursing and good understanding of the Peri-operative patient journey
  • Ability to provide patient care that meets individual needs with preservation of dignity and confidentiality
  • Delivers care that recognises patient’s rights and is sensitive to ethnic and cultural values


This is a Monday to Friday department that has roster shifts covering between 0645 and 2100.  Nursing staff require assessments skill to enable them to assess all elective and acute patients’ pre and post operatively.   All staff work very closely with the multidisciplinary team to ensure that the patient journey is a safe and positive experience.

  • Post Graduate Health Assessment is encouraged and required.
  • Ability to clearly articulate surgical instructions to patients and family
  • Full orientation to all areas of the Peri-operative Service is given


PACU has a rotational roster that covers a 24/7 service.  This area is where patients are recovered from their anaesthetic following surgery and before transfer to ward or discharge.  Advanced life support skills are required for all nursing staff in this area and we encourage nursing staff to complete post graduate Critical Care Course.

Operating Theatre (Scrub Side)

  • At least 2 years Operating Theatre (Scrub side) experience would be preferred.
  • Staff will be well supported through an orientation

Applicants must be eligible for registration (or currently registered) with the Nursing Council of New Zealand.
